Refrigeration: cold chains protected, energy under control

Temperature, door status and energy per refrigeration unit, around the clock. baiond protects the cold chain in kitchens, hotels and food production and shows which unit is drifting before the goods are lost.

The challenge

What goes wrong quietly.

The clipboard round

Twice a day someone walks from fridge to fridge, reads the display and writes the number on a list. Between the rounds nobody looks, and a list with gaps is what the food inspector gets to see.

A door that is not quite closed

A delivery trolley leans against the cold room door, a fridge door springs back a centimetre. The temperature creeps up for an hour, the compressor runs without a break, and nobody notices until the goods are warm.

No alarm when it counts

A unit fails on Saturday night. The local alarm beeps in an empty kitchen, and on Monday morning the stock goes in the bin. Refrigeration is also one of the largest energy consumers in the house, and nobody can say which unit is to blame.

  • Fridge 14 2.2°C
  • Defined range 2–7°C
  • Near the limit for 5h

Yes. Refrigerator 14 has been operating close to the defined lower temperature limit for the past 5 hours, at 2.2 °C against a range of 2–7 °C. All other monitored refrigeration systems are currently within their defined temperature ranges.

Sensors in use

Where the sensors sit.

Every dot is a sensor family in its typical place. Select one to see what it measures and what baiond does with it.

baiond connects temperature, door and operating data from every refrigeration unit on one platform. A temperature sensor in each fridge and cold room reads continuously, a magnetic contact reports every door that stays open too long, and a smart meter shows what each unit draws. The AI reads them together: which unit is close to its limit, which door caused the rise, which compressor runs longer than it should. When a value leaves its range, the right person gets a message with the reading, the likely cause and what to do, day and night.

What changes

The same site, run differently.

Two clipboard rounds a day and a temperature list with gaps.

Every unit logs itself, every few minutes, ready for the food inspector.

A cold room door stands ajar for an hour and nobody notices.

A message after five minutes: which door, since when, how warm.

A fridge fails on Saturday night. On Monday the stock is lost.

The on-call phone rings within minutes, with the unit and the reading.

The electricity bill rises and nobody knows which unit is to blame.

Consumption and runtime per unit, so the one that needs a service stands out.

Questions

What managers ask before they start.

Do I have to replace my refrigeration controllers?

No. The sensors are added to the existing units, and controllers or alarm units with an interface can be read through the baiond Gateway. Your refrigeration keeps running as it does; baiond watches it.

Does baiond replace the manual HACCP temperature log?

Every unit reports its temperature every few minutes, stored with timestamp and source. For an inspection you export the period as a list or curve per unit, instead of a clipboard with two readings a day.

Who gets the alarm at night or at the weekend?

You set the range and a delay per unit, so a defrost cycle or a short door opening does not raise an alarm. When a unit stays out of range, the on-call person gets a message by e-mail or push, with the unit, the reading and the trend.

How does the door monitoring work on existing fridges?

A small magnetic contact on the door and its frame reports open and closed. baiond counts how often and how long each door is open and flags a door that stays open longer than you allow.

Can I see which unit uses too much energy?

Yes. A smart meter per unit or circuit shows consumption and compressor runtime. baiond compares them with the unit’s own history and with similar units, so a clogged condenser or an iced evaporator shows up as a curve, not on the bill.

How long does it take to equip a kitchen?

The wireless sensors run on batteries and are fitted during normal operation, without drilling into the units. A kitchen with a dozen fridges and two cold rooms is typically live within a day.
